You but Not Only You

RailsConf 2019

RailsConf 2019, as a technical conference, there is a bunch of presentations about the fundamentals, deep inside the Rails framework, leveling up the skills. Rather than deep diving into those talks I attended, I would like to share more about DHH and other speakers’ thoughts about the Rails community, the connections within it and the bonds with the world.

Self-Actualization to Transcendence

It’s often to hear a lot of announcements in a tech conference opening keynote, but not in this one. DHH talked a lot about how the software industry has gone so far and how he started implementing and releasing Rails.

He pointed out the open source software ecosystem is in a weird situation that we have to do many marketing works to compete with commercial softwares and then thrive. He does not agree with this point of view that the ecosystem and the community should be this way.

DHH extracted Rails from his work at Basecamp and released it as an open source software. The act did not mean to be the pursuit on making money but just to share the work and lower the gap of crafting a web application. He shared Matz’s words about creating Ruby as another example.

As he shared, we could contribute to the community with many things starting from making ourselves better. And as the taker from the community, we could be more involved in pushing back to the upstream to make it better. Every payout will go back to us eventually, with a better, greater world.
